Overcoming structural issues in Essendon

Before After Zesta Kitchens Essendon

Part of a beautiful period home, this kitchen was generous but dated. An intrusive support beam also acted as a major barrier between the kitchen and surrounding living spaces. The homeowners had consulted several kitchen experts about removing the beam, but none had come up with a suitable design.

This is the kind of challenge our team thrives on, and we were able to develop a few options. In one, we suggested keeping the support beam and hiding it by making it part of a wall of cabinetry. The owners loved this idea as it gave them more storage space and the open plan feel they were after.

As an added bonus, this design effectively moved the kitchen forward, creating space for a hidden Butler’s Pantry. A freestanding island bench was also added to the main kitchen area to maximise storage and improve the overall flow. And a clean and bright colour palette was used throughout to make the space feel lighter and more open.

Optimising open plan living in Croydon

Before After Kitchen Croydon

While the new owners of this home loved how open the kitchen was, they felt the space wasn’t used effectively. There was a significant structural wall that divided up the space and several issues with the general flow. They also thought the pine cabinets and open shelving made the space look dark, dated, and cluttered.

Once again, our design team recommended working with the structural elements, turning the supporting wall into a functional pantry space. This also helped address the clutter issue, adding a significant amount of enclosed storage to the design. A freestanding island bench was also used to maximise storage while improving the flow into, around, and through the kitchen.

Finally, a bold two-tone colour scheme was chosen to add depth and create a contemporary look. In this, navy cabinets and feature tiling have been offset with white to make the space feel cleaner and crisper. Touches of timber complete the look, including floating shelves made from wood recycled from the old benchtop.

Unlocking entertaining space in Richmond

BeforeAfter Zesta Kitchens Richmond

Part of one of Richmond’s iconic warehouse conversion complexes, this kitchen was the epitome of the industrial design style. And while the homeowners liked the look, they felt it was dark and that there were some major functionality issues. Specifically, the servery that defined the kitchen space really closed it off from the adjoining open plan living area.

Noting that homeowners loved to entertain, it was clear more open space was required, so the servery had to go. This allowed the kitchen to be reoriented, and a freestanding island bench was added to improve the functionality and flow. A monochromatic palette was also chosen, featuring a mixture of black and white cabinets and a white benchtop.
